Bill Sanders served in the Southern Army for almost four years, seeing thousands of deaths, until one day he takes a bayonet and a little drummer boy sticks a sword in his back. He heads north with a small wagon train of three families. When Clara dies from a grizzly attack, he wonders how long he can continue surviving. His small group is slowly disappearing due to grizzly bears, snakes, and Indians.
